Storage Tips

We’ve seen and heard it all over our two decades of owning and operating self storage facilities throughout Westchester County. Here are some great storage tips we shared with tenants over the years.

If you have any specific questions or concerns just give us a call

Fill boxes to their capacity

The first of our storage tips is to fill every box to its capacity. Be careful not to overstuff them, though. Irregular boxes or ones not packed full have a tendency collapse, particularly when stacked. It’s best to use larger boxes light weight items like sheets, pillows and blankets. Smaller boxes are best suited for heavier items like books and heavy tools. Take the time to protect glassware, china and dishes by wrapping them with clean packing paper or bubble wrap.

Plan your storage space in advance

Planning is an essential part of any move, but particularly important for self storage. If you ever need to access items you place in storage, planning ahead will save you hours of frustration in the future. Documenting where everything is inside the unit is one of the most useful storage tips many people fail to consider. Place easily accessible items in front of your room to avoid climbing over other items of lesser importance. Creating aisles, particularly in larger storage rooms is often very helpful for organization. Don’t make a common mistake, packing items too close together. Storage tips to circulate air include leaving room between boxes and forming aisles.

Inventory The Contents Of Everything In Your Unit

Regardless of your planned frequency of visiting the facility, no list of storage tips is complete without the advice of labeling each box and its contents before packing. It’s much easier to identify the most important box contents when you move out of your unit and when accessing anything your may need from it. Doing so just makes things much easier to find. Here’s a suggestion on how to best do this. Number each box for and catalog the number on a sheet of paper or on a google sheet. These self storage tips will help you when looking for something in storage and when you move into your home or office.

Use The Height Of The Unit To Your Advantage

Make sure you account for the cubic dimensions of the unit. Doing so takes the height of the ceiling into consideration. It’s not uncommon for rooms have ceilings of eight feet. Failing to plan for this is will result in underutilization of the space inside the unit. To maximize the space, make sure you think about the height. Many tenants consider this is one of several self storage tips that often get overlooked.

Fire prevention

Combustable items (explosives, perishables, or liquids) are prohibited from self storage.

Disassemble when possible

If you can take furniture (bed frames and tables) apart, it’s often in your best interest to do so. It makes moving items much easier and creates a better allocation of interior storage unit space.

Wrap fragile items

Fragile items should be packed in plastic, paper, and bubble wrap

Mattress Stacking

Mattresses and box springs are best stored on end to save floor space. Cushions should be wrapped in plastic and placed on top of furniture.

Use climate controlled Storage rooms when possible

Extreme climate changes negatively impact delicate and fragile items. Climate controlled units help prevent damage by moderating the temperature of the room. To learn more check out our climate controlled unit page.

Take a few minutes to create paths or aisles inside the unit so that you can access items even in the rear of the unit. You never know when you may need them, so don’t make it any more difficult than it needs to be to find things in the future. Creating an easy path to get you around your unit ensures that you’ll be able to make the most use of your storage unit.

From Small To Big

When you consider organizational storage tips, you’ll find that size plays an important role. Many people situate their larger items in the back of the unit, figuring they’ll be less likely to need them. by default, their smaller item,s tend to accumulate nearest the front section of the unit.

Chances are that you might actually need access to some of the larger items and boxes. For instance, you may a need that old cabinet and not anything else. If the cabinet is tucked away against the rear wall of the unit, you’ll have move things around just to get to it. Depending upon your circumstances, it may be a better idea for you to position your larger items like furniture, nearest the door. Though you may not need them as often as other items, you’ll be happier when it’s time to access them.

Consider Your Storage Unit An Extension Of Your Office

A storage unit is nothing more than storage for most people. It’s place to store things they don’t need, but don’t want to dispose of. This doesn’t maximize the self storage storage unit to its potential. Great storage tips include making self storage an extension of your home office. As storage unit can easily become the perfect place for papers, books, records, supplies and office equipment that you need don’t need every day, but may need on occasion.

This will go a long way towards organizing your important papers and books so that you’ll be able to avoid digging around the storage unit trying to find them down the road.
